Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills
My name is Deborah Spiegel. I’m a DBT informed music therapist. I first was introduced to DBT in 2001 when I started working at the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo. I was the music therapist on the treatment team of the adolescent unit, which was a DBT milieu. Marsha Linehan’s DBT organization provided training for our team. So in addition to being the music therapist I was also a DBT skills group leader on the unit for almost 12 years.
In my skills groups I found myself teaching DBT skills through music, and in my music therapy groups I was always teaching and reinforcing DBT skills with whatever intervention I had planned.
When I first started working there I wished that there was a how to book on DBT and music therapy, so after developing my own system for so many years I decided to share what had evolved for me in integrating DBT and music therapy by writing a book called Music Activities and More for Teaching DBT Skills and Enhancing any Therapy. I recorded a CD of some songs that I wrote to meet my patients where they are and lead them to skills for change, many of which I will share with you here in the course of our time together, and I created dbtmusic.com..
In 2011, I became a continuing education provider with the Certification Board for Music Therapy and traveled around the country teaching a live workshop on DBT and Music Therapy. In Feb of 2012 I did my first online version of that workshop, which led to me now being the CEO and director of The Spiegel Academy, where a team of professionals offer online continuing education classes on a huge variety of topics, including DBT, that are full of new ideas and strategies..
I’m so passionate about the benefits I have seen over the years of integrating music therapy and DBT, that I searched out a group of people, to add to the body of research on the value of teaching Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills through music therapy. More research is now being done!
